This category A gas turbine engines module discusses basic principles of operation, construction and respective technology of gas turbine engines. The various component parts of the engine are examined in detail and the layout and operation of associated systems studied.
The first sections reinforce the students understanding of the basic laws of physics required to understand gas turbine function. The operating cycle is then discussed and various calculations made to prove the principles. The engine itself is then examined stage by stage.
Each major assembly is explained, from the very early examples, used in the first generation jets, to the contemporary designs in use today. Associated systems, that engines require to operate correctly, are then studied. These include fuel, air, control, indication, fire protection and starting systems. Finally, maintenance practices are discussed. Students are introduced to techniques, employed in aviation, to optimise the operation and testing of gas turbine engines.
