This category A propellers module examines Turboprop engine types and introduces the aerodynamic principles that propellers use to develop thrust and systems necessary for their correct operation.
Initially, differing Turboprop configurations are discussed, ranging from early single shaft examples to modern free turbine designs.
Complex gear reduction methods, necessary to ensure correct propeller rotational speeds, are then studied. Propeller operation is discussed in detail including aerodynamic effects, thrust production and the forces involved. Materials and construction methods are examined, followed by differing designs employed by manufacturers to control pitch actuation and other necessary functions. Three specific propeller systems are then looked at in depth. Finally maintenance procedures for propeller maintenance and repair are discussed.
