The Mechanical element of the module provides students with the knowledge required to select and use the appropriate tools, materials, drawings and equipment necessary to perform aircraft maintenance tasks. It also provides them with knowledge necessary to work effectively and safely in an aircraft maintenance environment.

The module also covers the inspection and testing of aircraft control systems and the inspections required following aircraft abnormal events.

The student will also gain knowledge of inspection, disassembly, assembly, repair, ageing, fatigue and corrosion, as well as the procedures to assess, remove corrosion and re-protect aircraft.

The Electrical element of the module covers the principles and inspection of an aircraft’s Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) including continuity, insulation, bonding techniques and testing by providing students with the knowledge required to select and use the appropriate equipment and manuals necessary to perform aircraft electrical maintenance tasks. This will involve the student studying the operation, function and use of electrical general test equipment and avionic test equipment.

The student will gain knowledge in the use of crimp tools (hand and hydraulic); testing of crimp joints; connector pin removal and insertion; co-axial cable testing and installation precautions as well as troubleshooting techniques. Also included are wiring protection techniques such as; looming, cable support as well as damage tolerance.

Both elements will also teach the student to adopt ‘good working practices’ by following approved methods, procedures and processes to perform aircraft maintenance tasks.
